TransTalk Sparks Dialogue on Mental Health and Inclusion for Transgender Filipinos

TransTalk Sparks Dialogue on Mental Health and Inclusion for Transgender Filipinos

In celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month and in response to ongoing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments both locally and globally, the Philippine Association of Psychologists (PAP) LGBT Psychology Special Interest Group hosted “TransTalk: Chikahang Mental Health ng mga #TransSaPsych”—a virtual roundtable discussion held on February 23, 2025, via Zoom.

Moderated by Mx. Rolf Gian Marcos, Chairperson of the PAP LGBT Psychology SIG, the event brought together an inspiring panel of transgender advocates and mental health professionals, including Dr. Ver Reyes, the first transgender woman President of PAP; Mr. Mibo Borres of the Ateneo Gender Hub and Bulatao Center; Ms. Josephine Bautista of the Society of Trans Women Philippines; and Mr. Vii/Vince Nicholas of Transmasculine Philippines.

The discussion focused on educating attendees about SOGIESC (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics), addressing persistent misconceptions about transgender people, and spotlighting the unique mental health challenges faced by the trans community—particularly in a society where misgendering, discrimination, and limited access to gender-affirming care are still widespread.

Speakers highlighted how everyday language, such as pronoun use and honorifics like “Ma’am” and “Sir,” can either affirm or invalidate someone’s identity. They also shared personal stories of resilience in the face of systemic barriers, from workplace discrimination to the legal hurdles of identity recognition.

More than just a talk, TransTalk served as a platform for empowerment, education, and advocacy, emphasizing the urgent need for inclusive policies, better mental health support, and stronger community networks for transgender Filipinos. --
